Letter Layers is an interactive educational software tool designed by a class room teacher to help overcome the problems that children have in understanding the structure of cursive handwriting.
Letter Layers helps develop important early learning skills:
Following two years development and pilot testing in a state infants school, Letter Layers was launched in November 2005 to schools in the London Borough of Sutton and is now used as a core curriculum tool by 30% of Sutton primary schools.
Letter Layers has eLC accreditation and has been independently evaluated by Schoolzone. Read the Schoolzone review
Letter Layers was designed and developed by Mary Coen, a teacher based at St. Elphege’s RC Infant School in Sutton, who is an Early Years Advanced Skills Teacher (AST) with over 20 years Early Years teaching experience and a Masters Degree in Special Education. Her research has focused on problems that children experience in developing early literacy skills and she has designed Literacy Intervention Programmes for schools.
Letter Layers can help shorten the length of time children take to become independent in using cursive letters correctly in their writing. It facilitates early writing development and supports sound/symbol recognition.
Letter Layers is compatible with and complements Synthetic Phonics.
